Rebellion Publishing imprint Solaris has announced that it is being acquired by Profile Books. As of July 1, 2026 Profile will take over turnover and ebook distribution. As of September 1, it will take over physical books. Solaris staff Amy Borsuk, Natalie Sorrell Charlesworth, Jess Gofton, David Thomas Moore, and Amanda Raybould will transfer across.

Profile CEO Rebecca Gray said,

We are thrilled to be taking this big step into a new genre. Solaris is already home to a wealth of acclaimed authors writing original, captivating books. We can’t wait to work with them, and everyone involved from Profile and Solaris is terrifically excited to get going. Keith Giles, co-owner of independent publisher Quoir, has announced the launch of new SF imprint Pink Beam Press, which will publish “visionary, provocative, and genre-defying speculative fiction.”

The imprint will launch at the Philip K. Dick Festival 2026 with seven SF novellas: Sim Cop and the Haunted City by David Agranoff, Shadowboxing by Gordon Bonnet, Glitch by Brian Evenson, Hard Video by Keith Giles, Bloody 13 by Sarah Langan, Services Rendered by Anthony Trevino, and Bubblegum Circuit Tower Dash by Andrew Turck. It will also publish short story collection Still Life with Apocalypse by Richard Kadrey and a new SF novella by John Shirley.

Giles said,

We created Pink Beam Press to champion the kind of science fiction that Philip K. Dick himself would have appreciated. Stories that question reality, challenge authority, explore consciousness, and force us to reconsider what it means to be human in an age of accelerating technological change. We believe science fiction remains one of the most important literary genres for understanding the world we are creating together.

Cozy fantasy Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter by Heather Fawcett moved up to the top of our hardcover list with a decisive lead over our second-place finisher, Matt Dinniman’s The Butcher’s Masquerade, the fifth book in his Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Our runner-up was The First Step by Tao Wong (Ace), the first book of twelve in the A Thousand Li series. There were 55 nominated titles, the same number as last month.

Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary reclaimed the top spot on our trade paperback list, followed closely by last month’s winner Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. There were no new runners-up. Fifty-five titles were nominated, down from last month’s 74.

On our media and gaming-related book list, only two books made our list. Both titles were by Dan Abnett – Warhammer 40,000: The Horus Heresy: Horus Rising came in first, followed by Warhammer 40,000: Eisenhorn: The Omnibus. There were no new runners-up. For the third month in a row, we had 22 nominated titles.

LAcon V has announced the Hugo Awards Base will be designed by Scott Lefton, and the Lodestar Award Base will be designed by H. Emiko Ogasawara.

Lefton specializes in multiple artistic forms, including metal, glass, wood, electronics, and digital design. He designed the 2004 Hugo Award base and the Hugo rocket displayed on the International Space Station. He is also an engineer. He says, “I’m honored to have been chosen to craft this year’s Hugo base design, and hope that it will remind people about LAcon V and about what our community values in creativity.”

Ogasawara is an artist and art instructor who works in traditional media, such as ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and paper engineering. Her work often “emphasizes interactive, functional, and kinetic elements that invite people to become participants rather than mere viewers.”

Author Jane Yolen, 87, died peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, in Hatfield MA on June 11, 2026.

Jane Hyatt Yolen was born February 11, 1939 in New York City NY. She graduated Smith College with a BA in 1960, at which time she was already writing poetry and articles, and received a master’s in education from the University of Massachusetts in 1978. Between degrees, in 1962, she married David W. Stemple, and they were married for 44 years before he died of cancer in 2006. She gained attention as a writer through children’s book Pirates in Petticoats (1963), published on her 22nd birthday and went on to write over 450 books and a monumental oeuvre of short fiction and poetry. From 1986 to 1988, she was president of the Science Fiction Writers Association and later was named a Damon Knight Grand Master. She ran her own young adult fiction imprint at Harcourt Brace from 1990 to 1996, and she was on the board of directors for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators for over 25 years. She lived in Western Massachusetts and had a house in Scotland which she would visit for a part of the year.

Yolen’s more than 40 novels were mostly aimed at young adults and children, and she produced many series: To name a few, the Mythopoeic Award-winning Young Merlin trilogy included Passager (1996), Hobby (1996), and Merlin (1997); the Great Alta series included Sister Light, Sister Dark (1988), White Jenna (1989), and The One-Armed Queen (1998); the Pit Dragon series included with Dragon’s Blood (1982), Heart’s Blood (1984), A Sending of Dragons (1987), and Dragon’s Heart (2009); and the Seelie Wars series, written with her son Adam, was The Hostage Prince (2013), The Last Changeling (2014), and The Seelie King’s War (2016). She also wrote standalones The Devil’s Arithmetic (1988), which was nominated for a Nebula Award and a World Fantasy Award; adult fantasy Briar Rose (1992), which won a Mythopoeic Award and was nominated for Locus, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards; and Locus Award winner Pay the Piper (2005), among many others.

Her poetry was nominated for 13 Asimov’s Readers’ Poll Awards, of which four won: “Angels Fly Because They Take Themselves Lightly” (1991), “A Street Away” (2019), “Ode to Cassini” (2020), and “Mars Rover, Curiosity” (2021). Her poetry and short fiction was published frequently in Asimov’s, as well as in Eye to the Telescope, Sycorax, Shoreline of Infinity, Strange Horizons, Star*Line, and more, plus many anthologies and more than 60 of her own collections and chapbooks. Among the more notable collections are Locus Award nominee Sister Emily’s Lightship and Other Stories (2000) and World Fantasy Award winner The Emerald Circus (2017). “Sister Emily’s Lightship” (1998) is one of her two works to have won a Nebula Award, along with novelette “Lost Girl” (1999). She also edited over a dozen anthologies, including Things That Go Bump in the Night (1989) with Martin H. Greenberg and Mirror, Mirror (2000) with her daughter Heidi.

Yolen collected multiple lifetime achievement awards, including NESFA’s Skylark Award in 1990, the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2009, the SFPA Grand Master Award for poetry in 2010, and the SFWA Grand Master Award in 2017.

She is survived by her children Adam, Heidi, and Jason, and a community that loved her.

The British Fantasy Society, HWS, and Karen Fishwick have revealed preliminary plans for Fantasycon 2027. Fantasycon 2027 “will include some aspects of World Fantasy Convention including the World Fantasy Awards. This is alongside all the usual Fantasycon content of panels, readings, books, art and social activities.”
