It's The Hope That Kills You
I specifically waited to write those pieces to make sure nothing that came out concerning Platner was sexual assault, and thatβs no longer the case.
Iβll talk about it at more length when I get past my current deadline, but when Iβm wrong, Iβm wrong. I believe the accusation, which is probably only in the singular for now. The story is harrowing. I feel terrible for his ex, and terrible for his poor wife who has had to stand up there and smile through so much shit, as politiciansβ wives are always forced to do.
God fucking dammit.
I felt so hopeful at that speech. I thought there was a glimmer of possibility this could work for us instead of against us.
But sometimes it glimmers because itβs a mirage.
Iβm gonna have to find some way to explain this to my kid, who will be heartbroken and unable to understand. What I will never be able to understand is why people run who they know they have all this horror in their rearview. It ends up deeply harming the people they supposedly care about representing, and poisoning the well for everyone else.
Because heβs almost certainly going to drop and god help whoever replaces him because theyβre going to get eaten alive soul-first. Even though he was only barely polling within the margin of error against Collins last week, which was never a good sign. Most people were like me: willing to look past a lot of crap we hated because we agreed with the message and thought he could win. Thatβs over now. Thereβs 7 days to replace him and none of this will be the replacementβs fault, but theyβll get pilloried anyway.
And once again itβll all be blamed on the Democratic Party, despite Platner utterly screwing them and spending his whole campaign constantly saying he wasnβt supported by them nor did he particularly like them or consider himself one of them. They have no good choices, and whatever they do itβll be their fault according to everyone who has a vested interest in nobody supporting Democrats unless they say theyβre not really Democrats.
Thanks a fucking lot, Platner. Good game, you probably lost the remaining sane people of this country the Senate.
