22 October 2026 at 15:00
A person holds the Insta360 Mic wireless transmitter between two fingers with a flower illustration displayed on its screen.

Following the launch of its wireless Mic Pro system last May featuring built-in color E Ink screens for custom branding and an array of three microphones to emulate different pickup patterns, Insta360 has announced a cheaper alternative that skips a few features many content creators might not miss.

The new Insta360 Mic sits between the company's Mic Pro and the budget-friendly Mic Air, which uses much smaller screenless transmitters. While the Mic Pro is priced at $329.99 for a kit that includes two microphone transmitters, one wireless receiver, and a charging case, the Insta360 Mic costs $249.99 for a similar bundle. Insta360 sells the m …

Bose announced today it has acquired Skullcandy. Although the two companies are competitors in the consumer audio space, Skullcandy recently partnered with its new owner to bring several of Bose's audio technologies - including its head-tracking spatial audio and excellent active noise cancellation (ANC) - to products like the Skullcandy Crusher 1080 ANC headphones and Method 360 ANC earbuds.

Spotify is busting free of CarPlay with the launch of its first native car app

21 October 2026 at 14:00
Spotify native car app in Audi vehicle

Spotify announced Wednesday the launch of its next-generation, fully native in-car app, built directly on Google's Android Automotive operating system. The standalone app, which is launching today in select Audi models, runs directly on the vehicle's infotainment hardware - eliminating the need for phone tethering, Bluetooth connections, or aux cables.

It's the clearest sign yet that Spotify is ready to move beyond Apple CarPlay and Android, popular phone projection systems that currently dominate the way most people consume media in their cars. And with 34 percent of Spotify's monthly active users and 77 percent of Premium subscribers stre …

It’s hard to imagine wireless headphones ever getting lighter than these

19 October 2026 at 16:03
A person wears the Final Porta wireless headphones with orange ear pads.

If you're on the hunt for lightweight wireless headphones but wearing earbuds or clip-ons never feels comfortable or secure, a relatively obscure Japanese headphone maker could have the solution. Final's new Porta headphones feature an on-ear design supported by a headband but with a structure made from a single piece of wire so they weigh just 40 grams. For comparison, Marshall's recently-launched Milton A.N.C. are also designed to be smaller on-ear headphones but weigh 200 grams.

The Final Porta are available for preorder now through the company's online store for 12,800 yen (around $80) with black or orange ear pads and shipping expected …

SUMMER MUSINGS: True audiophile aspirations; recent events in the audiophile culture - end of Atkinson's Stereophile measurements, YouTube influencer legal drama.

Through my years as an audiophile, I've come across articles in magazines and online talking about hobbyist "aspirations". At audio shows, and seemingly each new issue of magazine we read, we're introduced to the latest and greatest piece or gear, the next "must have" item to consider in this never-ending path of upgrade to satisfy luxury consumeristic appetites.Given that it's "Summer Musings"

Inexpensive USB2.0 Digital-to-Digital Converters (DDC) Pt.1: Douk Audio U2 PRO (Upgrade Version) and SMSL PO100 PRO - initial look, about IΒ²S-HDMI. In praise of unofficial Atmos mixes!

This SMSL unit also does MQA decoding for those who want the feature. Unlike the Douk, this box only has an LED to indicate MQA decoding status but does not tell us the PCM or DSD samplerate. While I've tested some inexpensive devices (like the Topping D10s DAC) which have the ability to convert USB 2.0 input into S/PDIF output, I have not specifically looked into these Digital-to-Digital

Douk Audio VU3 Pro Analog VU Meter - more bling! (Make sure to try some harder music at audio shows! πŸ˜‰)

Hey there guys and gals, since I've been in the mood for bling this end-of-year season (as per recent discussion of the Fosi Audio LC30), let's grab another one of these VU meter boxes - as you can see above, it's the Douk Audio VU30 Pro (typically around US$150, Canada link, AliExpress), a 2024 upgraded version of the Douk Audio VU3 (non-Pro) which came out back in 2021.Similar to the

Auro-3D "Auro-Matic": Preset and Strength settings and effects. (Brief look at Dolby Surround Upmixer and DTS Neural:X.)

A number of months back, I talked about the nVidia Shield TV Pro box and explored Auro-3D which is another technology for reproduction of immersive sound with height layers. As noted in that post, I've seen comments over time about the use of Auro-3D's "Auro-Matic" surround upmixing algorithm for music playback as being the preferred setting compared to Dolby Surround Upmixer [DSU], and DTS

QUICKIES: Black aluminum alloy footers. Equipment racks. Center channel in music. Underwhelming Spotify Lossless. More Paul McGowan/PS Audio USB cable & jitter foolishness.

Hey guys and gals, not much time this week to test stuff but to start I thought I'd show some pictures of the black version of the inexpensive aluminum footers that were discussed last week.I got these black-colored ones (AliExpress) for my center channel, the Paradigm Signature C3 v.3 which is a 3-way, 4 speaker design that sits on my wood/glass component rack.
