Patrick Stewart, “Star Trek” and “X-Men” star, dies at 86

29 October 2026 at 23:58

English actor Patrick Stewart, who became world-famous as the star of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and the “X-Men” movies, died on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86. Kelly Bush Novak, his longtime spokesperson, announced that he died from Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, which is marked by features of Parkinson’s disease.

“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all,” Bush Novak wrote. “We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”

Stewart’s distinctive baritone voice and striking bald head made him one of the most familiar actors to American audiences, but until the late 1980s, he was virtually unknown in the U.S. Before his casting as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” he had spent decades as a classical theater performer in Britain, especially in the works of Shakespeare. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, where he met fellow actor Ian McKellen, who would become a longtime friend and collaborator.

Over the course of his career, he received four Emmy nominations for his television work, as well as two Laurence Olivier Awards and a Tony nomination for his role in “Macbeth.” In 1996, he won a Grammy for best spoken word album for children for “Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf.” He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010.

Later in his career, Stewart reprised his role as Picard in various “Star Trek” films and a recent spinoff series. His role as professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” film series from 2000 to 2017 helped propel his career to new heights and usher in a new era of superhero films. He is set to appear as Xavier in “Avengers: Doomsday,” which will be his final on-screen film appearance.

“I think I’ve been in denial about my life for a very long time,” Stewart told The Guardian in 2023. “I never really took on board how successful I had become. Even today I sometimes think, ‘You’re a lucky son of a b**ch, Patrick,’ when something unexpected or good happens to me.”

Stewart was born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, England, a small town in West Yorkshire. He is survived by his wife Sunny Ozell, an American singer, whom he married in 2013; his son, Daniel, also an actor; and his daughter, Sophie.

He eventually landed the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran from 1987 to 1994. Magic: The Gathering Star Trek – How Rare Are The Signed Cards (And How to Get Them)?

22 October 2026 at 20:28

Magic: The Gathering Star Trek may not contain The One Ring, but it does still have some seriously rare (and likely valuable) chase cards that collectors will be trying to hunt down.

How Many Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Signed Cards Are Being Released?

On occasion, Magic: The Gathering sets will include special rare inserts in select products that give players something to chase down beyond the most powerful or pricey Mythic Rares in a given set. The upcoming Star Trek set is continuing that tradition by having famous actors from Star Trek’s history sign a very limited number of cards before they are packaged into their respective boosters.

The actors of Star Trek are synonymous with the franchise’s impact, and they’ve brought their gravitas and likenesses to Magic with these signed headliner cards.

“Each signed card was printed, physically signed by an iconic Star Trek actor, and randomly inserted into a Collector Booster. These signatures, which come paired with a portrait-style depiction of their character, are a genuine piece of Star Trek history, and you can bring them to your Magic collection.”

There are 7 different signed cards in Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek. There are fewer than 250 copies of each signed card, and each features a signature from a Star Trek actor.

That means at at the very high end, there are only 1,750 of these signed cards in rotation.

In terms of opening one of these Signed cards, players will need to be opening Collector’s Boosters. Signed cards can only appear in Collector Boosters of any language, but the card will always be in English. Opening Collector Boosters will be the only way to find the cards in the wild, unless players want to spend money on the secondhand market to purchase them.

Once the signed cards start appearing in the wild, it will be very interesting to see what sort of prices they go for on the resale market and which ones become the most popular. These type of cards tend to become highly sought after items, so prices will probably be quite high.

Be sure to check back soon for lots more Magic: The Gathering news as the Star Trek set’s release date approaches.

Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Adds Two New Mechanics for Commander Players

20 October 2026 at 20:16

Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming Star Trek set brings a handful of new mechanics to the CCG like most sets do, but it will also be introducing two new Commander specific mechanics.

MAgic: The Gathering Star Trek’s Two Commander Specific Mechanics

Just about every Magic: The Gathering set features a handful of new and returning mechanics to shakeup the Limited and Constructed metagames, but not every set goes so far as to introduce new Commander mechanics.

Fans of the 100-card multiplayer format may be excited to learn that Magic: The Gathering – Star Trek is bringing two new mechanics to Commander this November.

Battlefront (Commander Only)
Battlefront is an ability word used to highlight abilities that care about the number of opponents you attacked this turn. This number will be used in different ways, depending on the specific battlefront ability. To attack an opponent means to declare one or more creatures as attacking that opponent. Creatures that enter the battlefield attacking won’t count. For example, if you attack a single opponent with a creature that has myriad, the number of opponents you attacked that turn is one, even though the token copies fanned out and went after each other opponent.

If there are multiple combats in a turn, battlefront abilities will remember who you’ve previously attacked. For example, say you’re in a game with three opponents, and in one combat phase you attack one opponent with Worf. Worf’s ability will trigger, and you’ll exile one card. If there’s another combat phase that turn and in that combat phase you attack the other two opponents, Worf’s ability will trigger again, this time exiling three cards
If instead in that additional combat you attack the same opponent you attacked in the first combat and one new opponent, Worf’s ability would exile two cards. Note that an opponent you attacked twice in a turn counts only once for battlefront abilities.

Seek Out (Commander Only)
Seek out is a new ability word that highlights triggered abilities that trigger whenever you draw your second card each turn. These abilities will trigger even if the permanent with the ability wasn’t under your control as you drew the first card.

So, if you draw Jean-Luc Picard, cast him, then draw a second card that turn, his seek out ability will trigger. Find a way to draw two cards during an opponent’s turn, and the ability will trigger again. Before you know it, your opponents will be left scrambling while you can relax behind a hand full of cards, a board full of colossal threats, and a nice cup of Earl Grey.

Once the full Commander decklists are revealed, it will be very exciting to see how Battlefront and Seek Out are put to use. Beyond the preconstructed decks, it will also be interesting to see how Commander players repurpose cards with these new mechanics into high-powered homebrew decks.

Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Commander Decks Are Delayed

17 October 2026 at 14:57

Magic: The Gathering’s next big set officially launches in just about a little less than a month, but it sounds like some of the products may unfortunately be delayed due to production and shipping issues.

Magic: The Gathering: Star Trek Commander Decks Likely Delayed in North America

Reality Fracture just arrived a few weeks ago, but it’s already time to begin looking ahead to the next major Magic: The Gathering set. Spoiler season begins next week for the upcoming Star Trek-themed Universes Beyond set and the set is scheduled to arrive in stores on November 13.

That said, some unfortunately shipping and production issues may impact that release date for some of the products. Luckily, Play Boosters and Prerelease Packs are on track for availability during Prerelease and release events.

Other products may be delayed depending on your region. Some products may arrive after Prerelease events on November 6, while others may arrive after the set’s tabletop release on November 13.

“These delays are fluid, as our logistics teams are working to speed up timelines where possible, so always check with your local game store or retailer for availability information.”

As of today, here is the list of which products are impacted in each region:

  • North America
    • Commander decks are delayed and may arrive after the tabletop release date.
  • Europe, The Middle East, and Africa
    • Collector Boosters (English, French, and German languages) are delayed and may arrive after the tabletop release date.
    • Commander decks (French and German languages) are delayed and may arrive after Prerelease.
    • Collector’s Edition Commander decks are delayed and may arrive after Prerelease, with additional quantities arriving after the tabletop release date.
    • Commander decks (English language), Draft Night, Scene Boxes, and Beam Me Up Bundles are delayed and may arrive after the tabletop release date.
  • Asia-Pacific
    • Collector Boosters, Omega Collector Boosters (single Collector Boosters available at larger retailers), Bundles, Beam Me Up Bundles, and Draft Night are delayed and may arrive after the tabletop release date.
    • For New Zealand, Scene Boxes are delayed and may arrive after the tabletop release date.

Commander is an incredibly popular format in North America, so there will definitely be plenty of players eagerly awaiting the arrival of those preconstructed decks. We’ll be sure to stay posted on the latest updates and share any new schedule details as they become official.
